The weather in the UAE normally keeps you confined within your comfortably air conditioned existence. However, when the summer heat dies down (which happens by November), it’s always great to head out and explore! There are several areas around the UAE which have beautiful scenery and amazing landscapes.
One weekend we drove down to Ras Al Khaimah (one of the seven Emirates) and climbed some small hills in a Wadi (valley). This picture was taken at Wadi Ghalilah in Ras Al Khaimah. The barren landscape is really interesting because you can see sedimentation layers from millions of years of geological processes along the mountain sides.
If you want to get here, just take the E11 (Emirates road.. unless the name changed now :P) towards and beyond Ras Al Khaimah, you’ll come to a turn off and dirt road at Ghalilah. Take that and you’ll end up amongst these awesome mountains!

Our road trip around the UAE was fascinating. I imagined on the drive from Dubai to Fujairah that if we were to build roads on the moon, this is exactly what it would look like. The rocky landscape looks as though you’d cut yourself to pieces if you fell over. I’ve certainly never seen anything like it before.
I also loved that road to Fujairah! Brings back a lot of memories thinking about it!
I bet we have a lot of similar memories from Dubai and the UAE! ;)
How awesome – so many people (including myself) have travelled through the UAE and seen no more than just Dubai (or even the airport). Must try to get out of the city next time!
