We’re happy to bring the weekly Travel Photo Roulette over to Backpack Me this time!
Thanks to Ivana and Gianni from Nomad Is Beautiful for selecting us as the winners of last week’s photo competition, themed “People Sleeping”. This was our winning shot, taken in New Delhi, India:

MOUTHWATERING!
This week is Travel Photo Roulette’s round 80 and the theme is MOUTHWATERING! If there is something we love doing during our travels is digging into the local cuisine of the various places we go to. We believe food and eating are one of the greatest ways to connect with local people and learn more about their culture.
Everybody loves food and travel bloggers tend to have a thing for food porn, so we thought we’d give you an outlet for it right here. Go through the photos you’ve taken during your travels around the world, and let us know what your most suggesting MOUTHWATERING! shots would be. But don’t limit yourself to food photos! Many things can be mouthwatering depending on your state of mind and creative submissions are more than welcome around here!
To enter the Photo Roulette all you have to do is leave a comment below with a link to the photo you’d like to submit. All photos will be included in this post. Don’t forget to send along a caption of the photo to let us know something more about the image.
Submissions are welcome until the 27th of May (full submission guidelines below).
And the WINNER is…
Tony from 20 Years Hence
Fresh steamed dumplings in Taiwan. Taiwan was a food paradise for us, and we spent our (entirely too short) 18 days there eating everything we could find. Of course, the dumplings were spectacular, but would we expect anything less from the country that brought us Din Tai Fung?
This photo makes us mouth-water not only for the food pictured in it but for Asian food in general! Dim sum tend to be very photogenic and these dumplings are no exception. We love the way the food contrasts with the bamboo basket colors, that give a very appealing rustic texture to the image. The way the first basket of dim sum is in focus but the remaining are out of focus is a way of teasing your foodie instincts too: you know these ones would taste amazing and you’d be curious to find out what more there’s available to try…
Well-done Tony, and thanks for making our mouths water! :)

Is there anything better than fresh strawberry-infused water on a hot summer day? I got this from a small, local farmers market in Illinois. Tell me this photo doesn’t make your mouth water!
#2 MC Pol Cruz from Weekend Sidetrip
This photo was taken when I travel to Vigan (Philippines). This is Empanada, a deep fried dough wrapped with eggs and some tasty mix inside.
#3 Rika from Vegan Miam
(Portland, Oregon, USA) Departure Chef Gregory Gourdet Vegan Bite: Chia seeds, pumpkin and seaweed cracker with avocado, a slice of red onion, chopped scallions and spicy miso sauce.

Khao Soi – Yellow noodles with curry. A burmese influenced dish from the north of Thailand. This one was even less than 1 €. Looking forward to next winter and many more of them!
#5 James from Fly Icarus Fly
Not delicious per se, but kazari maki sushi (art sushi) is a newly popular Japanese trend. Leave it up to the Japanese to make food that’s aimed at the eyes as much as the stomach!
#6 Adam from Eating Amsterdam
I’ll submit this recent photo from Amsterdam:
#7 Sam from Indefinite Adventure
Raw Cafe in Lima, Peru, was our first real encounter with raw desserts…and now we’re hooked! These three desserts, made with entirely uncooked and vegan ingredients, were wonderful and mouthwatering and now every time I have a choice between a raw dessert and something baked, fried, steamed or boiled, I’ll always go for raw!
#8 Elena from Elena’s Travelgram
Red Sangria in Lviv – one my most fav cities in Ukraine. Perfect on a hot summer day.
Café Falstaff is located in Maastricht in the Netherlands and is the hometown of Andre Rieu. This is the go-to place for eating the fabulous Dutch style tapas with a side order of people watching.
#10 Leckie from Quit Job Travel World
I’m a sucker for anything watermelon flavoured, and on a 35 degree hangover day in Thailand this mouthwatering ice lolly saved my life.
#11 Chanel from La Viajera Morena
This mouthwatering photo is a picture of Okonomiyaki from Fukuoka, Japan. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese ‘pancake’ that can consist of many different ingredients. This particular one is comprised of ramen, scallions, cabbage, fried batter, and sauce.

A colourful stall in a colourful market – fresh strawberries decorated with mimosa in the Cours de Saleya in Nice, France. How could you resist?! (Hint – I didn’t….)

When you live in India and eat curries constantly, seeing a burger like this is so rare, it’s like trying to sleep on Christmas Eve as a kid waiting for the burger to be served!
#14 Austin from Abatures
If you have ever been to the Philippines then you probably have come across Halo-Halo at some point. With its shaved ice base and sweet, hodge-podge toppings it makes for a tasty treat on a hot day. If you HAVENT tried it yet, you should get on it :)
#15 Vlad from Eff It, I’m On Holiday
Going to Portugal has become synonymous with eating lots and lots of seafood, since it’s the perfect place to find the most amazing clams, octopus or lobsters, not to mention the great wine that goes along with them!

Pulled pork and slaw roll sprinkled with paprika from York’s YO1 Festival.

Enjoying the fine food offered from Lygon Street in Melbourne. Penne pollo with avocado.

My first thought for this challenge was some shots of blueberries and raspberries I made while living in the Black Forest. Nice shots but not much of a story. Then I remember that long day in the red centre when we arrived very late at camp and had to wait for the food to cook in the wood fire. Our mouth was watering for a very long time…but it was so worth it: One of the best meal I have ever had! The vegetables were so tasty and the ambiance fantastic.

Some might fine shots already, but nothing beats ‘This piggy cooked to perfection in my backyard, enjoyed with a cold beer.

I love cooking and this is one of my specialties: chicken in coconut milk with pumpkin and ginger topped with fresh mango cubes. If this won’t make your mouth water, I don’t know what will.

I never thought I’d need or want a break from pho, especially when I found the BEST pho in all of Vietnam at this tiny little restaurant in Sa Dec in the Mekong Delta region.
Then the owner brought me this – a homemade beef stew that had been simmering slowly for days, the meat just fell apart in your mouth. I’ve never tasted soup with such flavor, turmeric and garlic and heavenly mystery spices. So very different from pho, richer, fattier, this is a very “naughty” soup when compared with the fresh fare found throughout the rest of Vietnamese cuisine.
What made it taste even better was that it wasn’t on the menu, and was prepared just for the family who ran the restaurant. In this way the soup became a symbol of welcome, and made me feel at home in a town without another foreigner in sight.

I had this delicious lunch with the view on the Coloseum!
In Rome, Italy ofcourse :)

I chose this photo for the theme, Mouthwatering, of three draft beers, in Boston during this year’s Boston Marathon, one year after the bombings at the finish line. These beers never tasted so good as they did this day. We cheered on runners at Mile 22, and not only did we taste how good these beers were, but tasted triumph at overcoming tragedy.

This is a photograph of the Nobel prize winning chef Massimo Bottura’s dish “il ricordo di un panino alla mortadella”, meaning “the memory of a mortadella panino”. I tasted it for the first time a few months ago at his restaurant in Modena, I have saved 5 Euro a week for two years to be able to eat there!
It is made by soaking mortadella in water overnight at 10 degrees celcius, evaporating the water out of the mixture at 23 degrees, whipping the remaining mixture for 40 minutes at 40 degrees, passing it through a sieve, transferring the whole thing into a kitchen siphon, adding nitrogen and letting it rest in the fridge for two hours.
All I have to say about this dish, was that almost 20 HOURS after eating it I had a moment.
I was sitting in bed and remembered the taste of that mortadella mousse, so light and fragrant but also intense. All of my senses were filled with the delicious taste of mortadella and I closed my eyes and I remembered this meal.
I thought “how strange, I’m remembering a panino alla mortadella!”.

Chicken Karahi is a Pakistani dish, where succulent morsels of chicken are braised together with onions, tomatoes, oil, salt and spice. It’s then dramatically served in its own pan, with an accompaniment of hot naan, fresh out of the tandoor. Yum!

A party in your mouth and the best salad I have ever tasted in my life, courtesy of a restaurant in Luang Prabang, Laos that we ended up at after our first choice was closed for lunch. Crispy rice, sour pork, lettuce, herbs, chilis, peanuts…wow.
#30 Samantha from My Tan Feet
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and I’ll eat this all the time if I could! This is a malted waffle at a cafe in St. Louis, Missouri. Sweet cream, strawberries and blueberries on a crunchy waffle. Delish!

Nothing makes my mouth water quite like a meal of succulent Peking Duck!
#32 Rachel from The Travel Bite
I have SO MANY food porn pics. The most recent one would have to be fois gras French Toast at VUE on 30A. It’s a restaurant up in the panhandle of Florida. A bit of a local secret. The chef was on Hell’s Kitchen awhile back and is now recovering with live at the beach. ;)

Grandma always makes the best food in the world, especially when grandma is a Cypriot! Here is a salad she just whips up in a couple minutes.
#34 Frank from The Travels of BBQ Boy and Spanky
Mouthwatering for us was lunch in the small town of Bacharach, along the Rhine in Germany. This region has fantastic Reislings and we had a bottle to accompany a thin-crusted feta cheese pizza. One of our best travel memories!
#35 Irina from Trips That Work
I have a perfect mouthwatering pic for you! They sell these fruits dipped in liquid sugar at street stalls in Beijing. But I have to say they look better than they taste :))
#36 Lauren from Justin Plus Lauren
Here is a dish from one of my favorite restaurants in Toronto called Fresh. It is one of the most established vegetarian restaurants in the city. This meal is called the “Buddah Bowl” – brown basmati rice, grilled tofu, cucumber, tomato, bean sprouts, peanuts, and peanut sauce – all artfully arranged in a bowl! A healthy and delicious meal, best paired with one of their fruit smoothies.
#37 Rika from Cubicle Throwdown
This is parihuela, a seafood soup with a garlicky broth and all kinds of creatures from the sea in it, including an entire crab! This bowl was from a shack beside the beach in Puerto Chicama, a tiny fishing town in northern Peru. It was huge and fed two of us for just $3!

There’s no way to fully describe the sensorial experience of walking through the stalls populating Jemae el-Fna, Marrakesh, at night. You need to go there to understand the mixture of different smells, boiling snails and roasting meat producing such a thick mist you could eat air.

I recently enjoyed a delicious dinner prepared at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco by their banquet chef, Cynthia Motta. This strawberry dessert was almost too beautiful to eat! (submitted via email)

On our food tour by bicycle in Amsterdam, our final stop was to visit the largest market in Amsterdam, the Albert Cuyp street market. The chef at the street booth made us fresh, piping hot Dutch “poffertjes” or puff pancakes! The puff pancakes were quite airy and dusted with a mountain of powdered sugar and a large scoop of soft butter. Amazing!

The sticky sweets and apple tea of Istanbul. It became part of my daily routine. Love me some baklava!

Italian langoustine from the Mediterranean Sea grilled on a bed of grilled vegetables, eggplant, zucchini, red, and yellow peppers, with parsley and lemon.

Pungent ethnic food with spices and fresh ingredients knocks my socks off, but Angela Lasyone’s crescent-shaped meat pies are so mouth-wateringly delicious you’ll want to book a flight to Natchitoches (pronounced “NAK-ə-təsh.”) Her father created the pies and she’s tweaked the soulful Louisiana Creole recipes and become a fixture here. Flaky-crusted, saucy with 80% beef and 20% pork, or crawfish tails, and no rice, you’ll be glad you did.
#49 Calli from Have Blog Will Travel
Hope I’m not too late – thought we’d throw in a picture from Poland, this is zapiekanka, a sort of pizza type food served on a half baguette. Apparently it’s THE post-clubbing food in Krakow. Needless to say one is plenty filling.
#50 Alison from Green With Renvy
Wine in Burma? Yes, indeed. Trying to keep it local, I was so happy to discover the Ayethaya Vineyard, in the Inle Lake region. After a hot day of exploring Yangon, this cold glass really hit the spot poolside surrounded by bougainvillea.
Contest Overview
The contest rotates through travel/photography blogs, so the winner of the previous round of Travel Photo Roulette hosts the subsequent round on their own blog. The new host then chooses the next theme (a generic keyword or phrase) and people submit their interpretations of the theme over the course of the week of the contest.
At the end of the week, the hosting blogger chooses their favorite photo from the submissions and displays it as the week’s winning entry. They then include direction to the new host for the next round. Readers can attempt to sway the author into picking a certain photo via comments, but the author can ignore comments as they see fit. The game is repeated with the winner hosting the following week’s game and choosing a phrase for new photo submissions.
Feel free to share this article on Facebook, Twitter, G+ and StumbleUpon so more people can join the contest. The more the merrier!
Guidelines:
- One submission per blog, so sites that have 2+ authors only get one entry.
- Post processing is permitted, but photo altering (ie. using Photoshop) is not.
- Abstract submissions welcomed as long as it fits within the interpretation of the chosen phrase. Remember, the hosting blogger chooses the winner, so if they cannot understand the submission, you might not win!
- Please try and keep your images medium-sized and web-optimized.
- If you win, keep these in mind when choosing a new theme:
- Keep phrases general so that all bloggers can participate. Specific items like “Eiffel Tower” should be avoided but rather made open-ended like “monuments.” For variety, it is okay to say focused things such as “monuments at night” which most of us have pictures of. Phrases can be generic ‘signs’, or abstract ‘religion’
- Abstract thoughts are appreciated, but keep it within the realm that all readers will understand. No “Kafka-esque”, or “Overlooking Creation”. Use something that is able to be interpreted by all
- After 1 year, phrases can be reused, however new photos must be submitted.
- No obscene pictures or phrases allowed. Suggestive phrases and photography can be accepted, but please keep it within reason.
- Keep the ideas and photos fresh!
- Pictures from your entire portfolio are fair to submit. You do not have to take the photo within the week of the contest period to submit it.
- Most importantly, all photographs must be your own.
- One last rule, since this is a competition for travel and photography bloggers, you must have a travel/photography blog to enter. Sorry!
