A Chiloean Cottage

No, that’s not a typo. We spotted this really nice cottage in Chiloe Island. The city of Castro on Chiloe is full of cute little houses like this one. Most of the buildings in Patagonia are made of wood since it was observed that wooden structures had the best seismic tolerance. Since this region is no stranger to earthquakes on a massive scale (the 1960 Valdivia earthquake was the strongest recorded earthquake ever), it’s no wonder that people like to be prepared!

The houses are colorful and warm (see more photos here). What else could one ask for?
