I knew I had to start at this post, because it resonates so deeply with the travel culture, and day-to-day fears of everyone around us. When I first left to backpack Europe, and parts of Asia and the Middle East, everyone at home was scared of things like this. And ironically, just as you said – we were in Paris, fine, and then a few days later we were in Turkey, and Paris was attacked. Ours was Charlie Hebdo, but judging by your dates, yours was the next year.

Very well said, and I couldn’t agree more. Get out there, and travel! Love the statistics to drive the point home.

This is such a wonderful post. Jordan is one of the most wonderful countries I have ever visited. The people are wonderful, the sights are majestic, the food is delicious and I never felt in danger. I’m glad you had such a great time :)

As a flight attendant, I get to see first-hand how isolated events like the Brussels and Paris attacks affect peoples’ attitudes toward travel. I can’t tell you how many of my colleagues refuse to travel to Europe now because of the attacks. When people tell me how brave I am to travel abroad despite the political climate around the world, I laugh. I’m definitely not brave….after all, I’m even afraid of driving in downtown Seattle! It is not about being brave, it is about not letting fear get the best of you. After all, that is the goal of the terrorists, isn’t it?

Awesome post – I shared it on FB. People need to know this – living in Pakistan as I do, people constantly freak out about safety… but these are often people whose own cities have been targets of terrorism. Let’s see it for what it is – random, scary, but rarely a reason to stop travelling.

I gotta admit that when I’m in crowded places, which happens very rarely, I think “what if there are bombists around here?” and then I try to avoid this though and think about positive things. They are spreading fear and horror but they are so impredicable! They can be anywhere in the World right now.

But this kind of question is so normal. I didn’t think Colombia could be dangerous anymore until I was in USA right before flying to Colombia and all americans saying we were crazy because it’s such a dangerous country. Oh please it was one of the safest countries I ever been, just don’t be alone in weird places, like anywhere in the World. This is mostly the mass media that have a huge voice and people watch/listen and believe in every single word.
