I take issue with the judgement of other travellers in this article, Zara, because we are ALL guilty of ignorance regarding some things, even you. I remember a brief conversation with you at a meetup in Lisbon, months ago, where you basically shamed a woman for being a little nervous about an upcoming trip to a certain country because she was worried about safety. You were really quite rude. And the woman was absolutely right to be concerned - that country can be incredibly dangerous, particularly for lone women. I would know because it's my father's country. To laugh and blithely claim that 'it's totally safe' is inaccurate, misleading and even possibly dangerous advice. It suggests that you stuck to the sanitized, tourist areas (which you condemn other people for doing), that you never once opened a newspaper or tuned into local TV there to read about the dozens of awful crimes that happen every day and that you never really experienced it as a lone woman at all because you travel with your partner. I get irritated when people totally write off my father's country as a destination due to its reputation but I also get irritated when people go there with this attitude that it's as safe as Lisbon when it isn't. And if you think it is, then you were living in a bubble there. I would have enjoyed this article a lot more if not for the patronizing attitude. Some people are ignorant buffoons, sure, but try not to be so quick to judge.

Hi,

I've found your blog through your Lisbon foodie guide and I really like your way of writing! I totally agree, especially with the last paragraph and the way how people behave and also how you can see that more when you are still in one place.

I totally relate to this - I got to a point in 2012 when I was truly fed up with travelling, and places just didn't hold the joy or allure that they used to. Sometimes it feels great to call a place home for a while, and then travel from there <3

I can relate! I get agitated and edgy when I've stayed in a place for too long and need a move. I've been moving places ever since I remember, no place have I stayed for more than 4 years and it bothers me if it even starts to reach that mark.

Hi Zara,
I absolutely love your blogs, I think they inspire me to travel to places specially the ones which are less explored and not so commercialized.
Ashray was my classmate for a very brief time back in school. It is great to see you guys globe trekking and giving the amateur travellers like "me" some realistic travel goals.
Keep writing and keep inspiring us.
Love
