In my case, I had to fight my way into the kitchen instead. My mother felt guilty in making me do the kitchen work and my dad never approved, until he had a taste of the tea that I brewed for him. That being said my mom is proud of the fact that I can cook and according to her, her sisters are envious of this, as their own children haven't even learned the art yet.

I agree with you. Guys in kitchen is a taboo here. If a guy admits that he can cook, it's normal to expect people(including friends) mocking him with a witty complement, "Your spouse is luckiest person on the earth. Now go and make him/her a paratha(or Sandwich :p)".
Anyways, I cook.

Zara, this is a really interesting read! It's so much more in-depth than the usual travel stories about India, and rightly so, since you're not exactly "just a tourist" there. :) I've never been to India and I don't really have any plans to go. It might have to do with the fact that I grew up in Jakarta, Indonesia, which is also a chaotic place. I have the impression that India is a more intense version of it, and even Jakarta is often too intense for me. Thanks for taking me there through your stories! :)

"filthy rich" doesn't mean that people are actually filthy - this is an expression that refers to people who are tremendously rich, nothing to do with their hygiene!

Happy to hear about your cooking skills - that's a great skill to have in life! :)
