Stand-up paddle class with Makena in Maui

In MAUI: trying STAND-UP PADDLE for the first time

On a recent trip to Maui, Hawaii, we decided to try stand-up paddle for the first time. We wanted to do some water related activities but, at the same time, go for something new.

We came across Makena Paddle Tours and decided to have them organize one of the most beautiful mornings we spent in Kihei. In fact, this class turned out to be one of the highlights of our travels around Maui.

The morning started off early, with a yoga stretch at a lush garden by a secluded beach. At this time, the surroundings were perfectly serene and we felt very privileged to have a little bit of Maui all for ourselves. We wouldn’t have probably found this incredible spot if it weren’t for the class, so kudos to our instructors Alex and Kelly for this!

After Alex made sure our bodies were prepared to hit the water, it was time for Kelly to guide us with some quick pointers on how to make the most of our time on top of the boards. After moisturizing our skin with ocean-friendly sun block, we took our boards and hit the water.

We had a very enjoyable couple of hours ahead. Both paddling or even the times we just allowed ourselves to float in the middle of the ocean appreciating the landscape around, were fantastic.

In order to get acquainted with the soft waves and the boards, we first paddled sitting down.

It was only after a while that we tried paddling standing up. It wasn’t completely easy, but neither as hard as it may look from the outside. This just goes to staying that this activity will be entertaining from the first time you try it out itself… you do not have to be a pro to enjoy a kick-ass time!

We were very lucky to enjoy a super clear day. That lead us to do some snorkeling with equipment Kelly carried on his own board. Even before we hit the water, we had already spotted some turtles going about their daily routine. But we hear that in different seasons of the year you can see bigger creatures fairly nearby too. How amazing would it be to paddle while watching families of whales not too far? I guess one good reason to go back to Maui some other time and practice some more SUP…

The water was so clear this day that we could see the bottom from atop our boards itself. Plenty of colorful fishes, sea urchins and a few turtles kept us company. Incredible!

I love the fact that Makena Paddle Tours is a small company. The people running the show are the same ones guiding you on the several activities they offer (stand-up paddle, kayaking and yoga). This means there is always room for tailoring the experience according to your preferences. Furthermore, it all feels more authentic and relaxed, as you do not have to join a big group of tourists at a crowded beach.

Another thing that makes Makena stand out is their sustainable and environmental-friendly approach. In a place that receives such massive tourism, it is important to make wise choices that allow you to have fun, without leaving a negative impact behind. They treat you to water and fresh fruit out of non disposable containers, for example, and give preference to materials that do not harm the oceans and the island eco-systems. This clearly makes Makena Paddle Tours a more responsible option for activities in Maui.

They sure know how to represent Hawaii’s well-known aloha spirit and we were very happy to have them share those good vibes with us.
