More than once we've booked ourselves into a hostel with kitchen intending to prepare our own meals and ended up eating outside as the kitchen was too messy, or small or simply didn't have any clean pots to use! We didn't exactly backpack the US... just spent 2 weeks between NYC and Chicago at the end of our Latin American travels.. before we flew back home!
