Best Beaches in Menorca

Menorca is the most relaxing island of the Spanish Balearics. Compared to its big sister Mallorca, Minorca (how it is actually known in English) receives less influx of tourists. As a direct result of this, the landscapes are more pristine and unspoiled, making it a great vacation spot for travelers who like to enjoy a peaceful time outdoors.

Even though it is smaller than Mallorca, Menorca has more beaches than the bigger island! So much that, it isn’t so rare to have an entire stretch of sand all for yourself during certain times of year.

Cala Turqueta

Situated in the south of the island, this is one of the most famous beaches in Menorca. It takes its name from the beautiful turquoise color of its waters, surrounded by a vast pine tree forest with hiking trails. You can explore the woods and end up refreshing yourself with a dip in the ocean – sounds good, doesn’t it?

 

Macarella

Also in the south of the island, Macarella stands out for the intense blue of its calm waters, that often look as if they have been photo-shopped! On bright sunny days, the yachts by this beach may appear to be levitating, as the water beneath them is so incredibly crystalline. Right next to it there is a smaller beach, Macarelleta, ideal for those who’d like to enjoy sun bathing with a little more privacy.

 

Cala del Pilar

Not everyone will want to go to Cala del Pilar, and that’s exactly one of the reasons why this beach is so special! It can only be accessed on foot, after a trek that will take fit travelers around 30 minutes. Here, instead of powdery white sand, you’ll get to enjoy red thick sands, which some beach-goers end up rubbing themselves with, to enjoy the benefits of this mineral-rich mud.

 

Cala Mitjana

Along the lines of Macarella and Macarelleta mentioned above, Mitjana also has a little sister called Mitjaneta. There are both idyllic and tourists in Menorca sure know that! As such, make sure you get to Mitjana early in the morning, as the sand tends to get packed and finding a spot to lay your towel down may actually be quite a hard task to accomplish!

 

Cala Tortuga (aka Playa d’en Tortuga)

This beach goes on for about 200 meters, in a more tranquil setting than most around Menorca. Being in the north of the island, surrounded by the S’Albufera des Grau Natural Park, Cala Tortuga is a great option for folks who don’t particularly enjoy being surrounded by large number of tourists. The water is calm and rather shallow, making it perfect for swimming.

 

Cala d’Algaiarens (aka La Vall)

Even though this set of beaches are in the north of the island, their looks and clear blue waters remind us of the southern part of Menorca. You can park your car by the first beach and access the other stretches of sand by short walks. The furthest beach is only 15 minutes away from the initial one, but it’s clearly less visited. On the first one though, you can enjoy mud baths!
