Hi A & Z,

Just came to know abt your blog and I'm really thrilled and motivated to read few of your articles....One of them being abt Chennai which you mentioned...Most of them are true and in fact there are so many other things to exploit in Chennai. As David George, correctly mentioned, I think Chennaites(residents of Chennai) and south Indians speak more/better English than rest of the India. I being born and brought up in Chennai for 30+ years and staying in Delhi for the last 7 years is a witness to it...Looking fwd to read and feel your experiences in the days to come!!!!!

You are right! People in Tamil Nadu and Kerala do have higher rates of literacy.. and they also go abroad more! I guess it was just personal experience and coincidence.. not much more than that.

"In the South people don’t speak English as commonly as in the North, but some do."

I'm surprised that you had such a different experience. It is generally accepted that the South speaks more English than the North owing to higher literacy rates, IT and other industries. Your experience could be because places like Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan in the North are more focussed on tourism (hence more English), while in the south (except Kerala) other places are interested in other sectors.

[...] Last year we took a trip to Chennai. Zara had to see the south of India and what better place to start than take a trip to Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. South Indian temples are very different from the ones in the North. Intricately decorated with stories from mythology, the colors stand out and the tales from Hindu history come alive!
[...] When we went to Chennai last year, we were walking around and almost without realizing entered a slum kind of area. We continued walking regularly until I noticed that a group was looking at us with an intrigued look and, to my surprise, one of them was taking our video. These folks had no shoes and lived in houses made of cardboard and pieces of plastic. No house, no toilet and yet, not only they had a phone, it was a phone with camera! According to Wikipedia, 75% of Indians have a mobile phone. Yet only 35% have access to toilets. Talk about contrasts! [...]

Hi Karthic!
So glad to read that have a reader from Chennai! :)
You know? The words written in Tamil (which apparently is actually Malayalam.. oops!) were taken from Google Transliterate.. I guess it's not correct then, so we'll change it. Thanks for pointing it out!
Hope you stick around with us for upcoming adventures! ;)
Cheers!
