Awesome Things to do in Mexico City for Under USD10

Whether you are a culture vulture, sports enthusiast, an amateur anthropologist, or simply a lover of wandering walks, Mexico City has something for you. Beyond the more famous attractions of the Centro Historico, the options just keep growing.

Get Cultured at the Museums

The museums in Mexico City definitely are great value for money. The Museo de Arte Popular is free on Sunday, and there is no charge for bringing cameras. It consists of three floors of wonderfully accessible, vibrant, and inspiring popular art, with a great overview of Mexican crafts.

At the Secretaria de Educacion Publica you can find a set of murals by Diego Rivera. This is a great place to visit for free (especially on Mondays, when most museums are closed) to see impressive works by the renowned Mexican artist. Even though it is a working governmental building, you can walk around on your own.

Watch a Film at the Cineteca

The place is of great architectural interest, but with 10 screening rooms and an open-air projection screen, it’s the films that will draw you in, from classic and modern Mexican cinema to international films from the five continents. The price of a ticket is a bargain, between 25 and 40 pesos (USD2 to 3).

Visit Estadio Azteca

Visiting this soccer stadium is a history lesson in itself. There were two world cup finals held here, and most famously of all, it was here that Diego Maradona scored his most famous goal. For 80 pesos (USD5.5), you can tour the Stadium, walk the tunnel, and visit the field, the changing rooms, the pressroom, as well as the statue dedicated to the 12th player (the fans).

Watch Lucha Libre At Arena Mexico

This mix of fight and spectacle is such an iconic part of Mexico that it couldn’t be left out of this to-do list. Characterized by colourful masks and exuberant fighting techniques, you can experience “Lucha Libre” at the Arena Mexico for less than USD5. It’s close to Banderas metro station and the shows happen Tuesday and Friday only.

Explore the Markets of Mexico City

Mexico City is big in population and equally big in several markets that cater to all kinds of needs. Since looking doesn’t cost a penny, market hoping can be a satisfying activity. Street food stands and markets are never far apart. Check out Mercado de la Ciudadela for crafts from all over the country. For produce and spices, stroll trough Mercado de la Merced. If you have a taste for the exotic, check out Sonora market for santeria and witchcraft-related paraphernalia. If you are adventurous and ready for a bargain, venture into the Mercado La Lagunilla.

Stroll Through Neighborhoods Off the Beaten Path

If you want to experience Mexico beyond the Centro Historico and the Zona Rosa, then look to other areas, such as hip Condesa and Roma, or even further to the leafy and well-to-do suburb of Coyoacan. Here you can visit Frida Kahlo’s house or the Museo de las Intervenciones, situated in an old monastery and built on top of an Aztec shrine. Even though the options for accommodation are fewer than in the center, it might be well worth if you are looking for affordable hotels in Mexico City.
